Dear Members

Over recent months we have packed our Bulletin with loads of information about all the new Work & Health initiatives developing here in Cumbria, it’s been a joy to see local third sector organisations right at the centre of delivering these exciting new services.

In February Working Well (South Cumbria) was launched as one of the national vanguard work and health programmes in South Cumbria. Cumbria Health (a social enterprise) provides work coaches and is the access point for people wanting to use the service. Mind in Furness, GLL and Better are also all right at the centre of delivery, offering support services for people struggling with mental wellbeing and joint and back issues to stay in work and/or return to work after health problems. Follow this link to find out more & make contact https://cumbriahealth.co.uk/workwell/

October will see the launch of Work Well in North Cumbria (check the Bulletin for launch events and information). Once again, we are delighted to see that third sector organisations are a huge part of delivery offering fabulous new services right at the heart of local communities. As in the South, Cumbria Health provides work coaches and is the access point the service. The programme is supported by seven great organisations including CADAS, Growing Well, Citizens Advice, Fit4Life, iCAN Wellbeing, GLL & Together We.

If like Work Well you are launching a NEW service why not put together a brief note about it and send it to us here at the CVS. We are always happy to pop a quick article in the Bulletin, link to a website or share posters and leaflets online. This is your Bulletin, and we want to cram it full of all the fabulous services and news that you all deliver here in Cumbria.

We welcome information and updates about any of the following:

  • NEW services
  • Refreshed services

£11.8 million boost to help Cumbrian homes stay warm and cut energy bills

Cumbrian Councils have been awarded £11.8 million from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero to make fuel-poor homes more energy efficient.

Funded by the UK Government’s Warm Homes Local Grant, the three-year programme will benefit up to 800 homes across Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness by providing fully funded upgrades to improve energy efficiency and help cut household bills.
Works will be tailored to each household and focused on delivering energy efficiency measures such as loft insulation and solar PV. Other measures may also be installed, including more expensive options such as air source heat pumps, although these will be delivered in smaller numbers due to higher costs.
Eligible households are those with an energy efficiency rating of D to G, and either a total annual household income below £36,000 or a resident receiving a means-tested benefit.

What is Shout? A FREE, confidential, 24/7 text support service for anyone in the UK who is struggling to cope

Shout is a free, confidential, 24/7 text support service for anyone in the UK who is struggling to cope.

To start a conversation, text the word 'Shout' to 85258.
Trained Shout Volunteers are available to listen at any time of day or night and messages won't appear on your phone bill.

Once you text, you’ll receive four automated messages before you are connected to one of our empathetic Shout Volunteers. The volunteer will introduce themselves and ask you to share a bit more about what’s bothering you. This might include feeling anxious, having relationship problems, addiction, depression, bullying, self-harm and suicide. You will text back and forth and share what you feel comfortable with.

The goal of the conversation is to help someone reach a calm and safe place, with a plan of how to support themselves going forwards. As well as listening without judgement, volunteers may provide you with further resources or tools to help you get more expert support.

New Way to Access Crisis Mental Health Support in the North East and Cumbria

Last year, the NHS 111 ‘mental health’ option was launched across the country. That means wherever you are, you can get help in a mental health crisis by calling NHS 111.

If you call 111 from the Northumberland, Tyneside, Sunderland or North Cumbria and select the ‘mental health’ option, you’ll speak to the team of call handlers employed by Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (CNTW). They will listen, ask you some questions, and find the right support for you.

Because this service is now up-and-running, from 1 October we will be switching off the local 0800 numbers which people used to use to call for crisis support.

Get involved in research - Supporting families living in deprivation, when an adult caregiver with dependent children is at end of life with cancer

Preparing children for the death of a significant adult caregiver (such as a parent, grandparent or guardian) to cancer can be emotionally difficult and one of the greatest challenges a family can face. Health and social care professionals (professionals) can be helpful and supportive for families as the adults prepare and support children for this end of life experience.

This research focuses on those families who may be experiencing financial struggles at the end of life, in particular single parent families, non-White families such as those who are Asian or Black or families who are homeless.

The study is now recruiting for health and social care professionals (any discipline or grade) to take part in a one-off, 40-minute interview to explore their experiences and perceptions in supporting families living in deprivation when an adult with significant caregiving responsibilities for dependent children is at end of life with cancer.
