3rd June 2026

Dear Members

We are back and safely settled in our NEW OFFICES.

Very many apologies to those of you who struggled to get in touch with us over recent weeks. A combination of emergency and planned leave and the office move have meant we have been a little illusive of late.

Our new address is as follows:

Cumbria CVS

Suite 3 Warwick House.

Alanbrooke Road,

Rosehill,

Carlisle,

Cumbria CA1 2UT

Our telephone number remains the same:

Tel 01768 800350

As do all our emails:

Clare Edwards Health Partnerships Manager
claree@cumbriacvs.org.uk
Holly Ferguson Health Partnerships Administration Officer
hollyf@cumbriacvs.org.uk
Sarah Penn Health Partnerships Support Officer
sarah.penn@cumbriacvs.org.uk

And you can still access us on our website:

https://cumbriacvs.org.uk/health-wellbeing/

The Rosehill Estate is busy and vibrant with some great places to eat, and Cumbria Health is our near neighbour.

Sadly, we don’t have as much meeting room space in the new office so in the future we will only be able to host meetings of a maximum of 12 people.  As a result, Holly, Clare and Sarah will be much more itinerant in terms of arranging meetings and will likely be rocking up at a venue near you in the future.

Please do contact with us if you have space and might be interested in hosting meetings and/or workshops organised by the Health Partnerships Team. Generally, we are looking for rooms that will hold between 10 and 20 people with tea and coffee making facilities available and where possible some local parking.

If you haven’t already met with the Health Partnerships Team and/or you’d like to know more about what we do and how we can support you and your organisation to better understand our health and care landscape and how you can better connect with staff and services that deliver health and care please do get in touch. We are always happy to meet with you and happy to host you at the NEW OFFICES for a good old-fashioned face to face meeting.

We look forward to hearing from you

Safeguarding voices in Cumbria

Healthwatch Westmorland and Furness and Healthwatch Cumberland have published a new report exploring experiences of the Section 42 safeguarding enquiry process across Cumbria.

The report looks at feedback from both professionals and people involved in safeguarding enquiries, highlighting what is working well and where improvements may be needed. Themes include communication, involvement in decision-making, timeliness and understanding of the safeguarding process.

Safeguarding should be personalised, respectful and centred around the person involved. This report helps shine a light on real experiences and opportunities to improve support for people across Cumberland and Westmorland and Furness.

Key findings include:

  • 60% of professionals agreed raising a safeguarding concern is simple and straightforward
  • 33% felt well informed about what would happen and when
  • 60% of people and carers said they felt involved in decision-making
  • Communication was identified as an area where experiences were mixed

We’d like to thank everyone who shared their experiences to support this important work.

Funded Mecc Health Courses for Lancashire & South Cumbria

At Active Lancashire, we take great pride in our partnership with the NHS Integrated Care Board, delivering health coaching, Making Every Contact Count (MECC), and Patient Activation Measures training.

What are the benefits?

Implementing Making Every Contact Count will require training and up-skilling of staff with the knowledge, skills and resources necessary to support these lifestyle behaviour changes.

  • Frontline staff and volunteers routinely have thousands of day-to-day contacts each year with service users, and patients and MECC is about using these to empower and support everyone – including staff themselves – to make healthier choices to achieve positive health outcomes.
  • For organisations, MECC will provide staff with the leadership, environment, training and information they need to deliver the MECC approach.
  • For staff, MECC can provide the competence and confidence to deliver health and wellbeing messages. This helps encourage people to change their way of thinking/behaviour(s) and can direct them to local services that can support them.
  • For individuals, MECC means seeking support when needed and taking action to improve their own health and wellbeing.

Our collaborative efforts have a clear, unified goal: enhancing the health and wellbeing of the people within our community. We believe in providing equal access to healthcare services, ensuring that everyone receives the same high-quality care and

treatment outcomes.

Together, we are making a meaningful impact on lives, elevating the quality of healthcare, and sharing our resources and vision in building a healthier future for all.

NEW report on Men’ s health & suicide in Cumberland

'Man Up?' New Cumberland report highlights serious concerns over men’s health and suicide

Our Director of Public Health, Colin Cox, has published his Public Health Annual Report 2026, highlighting stark inequalities in men’s health — and calling for a wider conversation about masculinity and its impact on health, relationships and communities.

Titled “Man up? Understanding men’s health and identity in Cumberland, and why it matters for everyone”, the report shows that men in Cumberland experience significantly poorer health outcomes than women, including higher rates of suicide, substance misuse and earlier death.

The report identifies suicide, drug poisoning and injury as the biggest contributors to inequalities in life expectancy, with men accounting for the majority of deaths. Between 2022 and 2024, suicide rates in Cumberland were among the highest in England.

Drawing on local data, national evidence and lived‑experience insight - including findings from The Big Question work on suicide in Cumberland - the report explores how poverty, work, education, isolation and social expectations around masculinity shape men’s mental and physical health across their lives.

Have your say managing hospital appointments on the NHS App

New data from NHS England shows that around two-thirds (64%) of hospital appointments are now visible through the NHS App, with all acute trusts now linked to the platform. This means more people than ever are able to view and manage their hospital appointments digitally.

We’re keen to understand what this looks like in practice for patients locally.

How easy is it to track, change, or manage hospital appointments through the NHS App? Has it made things simpler, or are there still barriers that make it difficult to use?

Healthwatch Westmorland and Furness would really value hearing about your experiences both positive and negative.

Real-life examples and case studies are especially helpful, as they allow us to build a clearer picture of what’s working well and where improvements may be needed.

If you’ve used the NHS App to manage hospital appointments, please do share your experience with us.

Care homes consultation - have your say

Westmorland and Furness Council has launched formal public consultations on the future of two residential care homes.

Residents, families, staff and the wider community are being invited to share their views on options for the future of Applethwaite Green Care Home in Windermere and Grisedale Croft Care Home in Alston.

No decisions have been taken about the final outcome for either home. The purpose of each 12-week consultation is to gather views, understand impacts, and ensure that any future changes prioritise safety, continuity of care and quality of life for residents.

Cabinet recently considered detailed reports outlining significant challenges facing both homes, including buildings that no longer meet modern care and regulatory standards, declining occupancy, workforce pressures and high operating costs.

There are two consultation documents and surveys available - one for Applethwaite Green and one for Grisedale Croft.

Care home residents, families, and staff, and local residents and community organisations, are invited too.

A series of Drop‑in events, hosted by officers from the council’s Adult Social Care team, have been arranged:

For Applethwaite Green:

  • Monday 29 June, from 10.30am – 12.30pm, at Windermere Library;
  • Wednesday 1 July, from 10.30am – 12.30pm, at Ambleside Library;

VCSE Partnership Forum

We are lucky here in North Cumbria to have a vibrant Partnership Programme across North & East North Cumbria NHS area that supports our sector to connect with our statutory partners and particularly the ICB. The Programme also helps us to connect with colleagues in the VCSE working across the whole NHS North East and North Cumbria ICB area.

The Programme led by Lisa Taylor (whom some of you will already know) works hard to keep our sector informed about all the many changes that are happening in health and care.

Information flows through many routes:

The Health and wellbeing Network – open to all sectors.

Follow the link below to join the Network you will receive a bulletin which is distributed every 3 weeks. It cascades information including news and opportunities relating to health and wellbeing, as well as regular updates on the Integrated Care System from a VCSE perspective.

 The Health and Wellbeing Network

The Partnership Forum – open to VCSE only

The place where strategic health and wellbeing leaders from the VCSE come together and discuss the issues which matter to them. The Forum meetings occur every 2 months and feature presentations from a wide range of external stakeholders, including ICB leaders. This enables an additional form of two-way engagement between the ICS and the VCSE. The meetings also include updates regarding the Partnership Programme and ICS developments, as well as opportunities relevant to the VCSE sector.

Themed Networks – open to the VCSE only

Networks are for people responsible for health and wellbeing policy and strategic work within their VCSE organisation

They span the geography of our ICS (North East & North Cumbria) and provide representation for Communities of Interest (see below), and feed into our Partnership Forum, Executive Group and ICS-wide NHS networks and workstreams.

Network members receive regular programme information and exclusive meeting invitations to our Network sessions. These Networks also allow participants to actively connect with other VCSE sector colleagues from across our ICS geography to focus on key areas of policy and strategy.

New toolkit launched to improve support for families experiencing domestic abuse

A new toolkit has been developed to help services work together more effectively when supporting families affected by domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse can cause serious harm to adults and children. Many children who live with domestic abuse experience long‑term mental health difficulties and are at greater risk of being harmed by, or involved in, domestic abuse later in life.

Because domestic abuse affects the whole family, both adult and children’s services need to respond. For over twenty years, UK policy has encouraged professionals from different agencies to work together to keep children safe and support families.

‘Whole family approaches’ are one way of doing this, where teams from adult and child health and care services work together to support families.

However, this approach can sometimes bring challenges, with different ways of working across teams making it difficult to integrate services and maintain consistent practice, sometimes leading to gaps in support.

Toolkit offers step-by-step guidance

Access the toolkit and read more about its development

Endometriosis UK

Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women and those assigned female at birth from puberty to menopause, although the impact may be felt for life. In the UK, that’s over 1.5 million from all races and ethnicities living with the condition. Symptoms vary from person to person, some may have severe and debilitating symptoms, others may have no symptoms at all. There is limited research and so we currently do not know why it happens and sadly there is no cure.

Endometriosis UK is the UK’s leading charity for all those affected by endometriosis, determined to ensure that everyone gets prompt diagnosis and the best treatment and support. Support comes in various forms, from GP precedent letters, to the nurse support helpline, webchats and local support groups. There are support groups all over the UK, locally, we have the Carlisle and Cumbria Groups who provide support to local people suffering with the condition.

Developing guidance to remunerate & recognise VCSE support for community engagement in research

Making health information easier to understand

Clear health information helps people use services safely and confidently. To support teams to write more clearly, we’ve funded the development of the NHS Document Readability Tool.

The tool is now being refreshed and we’re inviting your feedback as we seek to improve it. Please try it and complete this short survey by Tuesday 16 June.

This matters because 43% of working-age adults in England do not have the reading skills needed to fully understand common health information, including medication instructions, screening invitations, vaccination messages and advice about when to seek care. Yet most health information is written at a reading age of 18 and over, excluding many people.
