19th March 2026

Dear Member,

Next week, on March 26th, we will be celebrating Social Prescribing Day. If you are planning any events let us know and we will share them on.

Cumberland Council's Social Prescribing team is hosting two events: in Maryport and Millom libraries, from 11-2. There will be free health checks and activities as well as loads of community groups sharing their amazing wo

For those in the Barrow area, Active Cumbria is working with social prescribers to host the 'Big Barrow Clean Up' setting off from the Town Hall at 1.45.

If you can't get to any of those, there is an online event, with our very own Sarah Penn on the billing. You can book on here The Power of People: a celebration of social prescribing across the North East and North Cumbria.

And in exciting news, we will be launching a Social Prescribing Approaches North Cumbria webpage, hosted on Cumbria CVS's site. It will include information about what social prescribing is, who does it in North Cumbria and all about the work of the Social Prescribing Steering Group. Watch out for the link on March 26th....

If that isn't exciting enough, at the end of April the steering group will be publishing a report into social prescribing-type approaches: 'Passion, Connection and Community: Person-centred neighbourhood care in North Cumbria'. It includes 8 case studies highlighting the amazing contribution link workers make to our communities and individuals. Don't worry about missing it - we will be shouting about it everywhere! A launch event will follow on May 7th in Carlisle...

Health Pathways for week beginning 16/03/2026

Clinical HealthPathways why are they important to the third sector & why you should get involved?

HealthPathways is an on-line resource which offers clinicians locally agreed information about health issues and conditions to make the right decisions, together with patients, at the point of care.
HealthPathways is designed and written for use during a GP consultation. Each pathway provides clear and concise guidance for assessing and managing a patient with a particular symptom or condition and who and how to refer them on for further tests and information. IMPORTANTLY Pathways also include information about other services including third sector organisations who can offer support and information to patients and their carers.
Content is developed collaboratively by general practitioners, hospital clinicians, and a wide range of other professionals including staff from the third sector. Each pathway is evidence-informed, but also reflects how services are delivered locally.

Third sector organisations can get involved in 2 ways:
1. Every fortnight new Pathways are published in draft form. You can get involved in commenting or asking for information to be added to the Pathway document. See below for the latest list.
2. Most important we want you to check through the Pathways and add your organisation’s information/website details to the Patient Information and/or Staff Information sections if you think it would be useful for GPs and other health staff to give patients your information

Stakeholder survey on support for older people in Westmorland and Furness

Stakeholder survey on support for older people in Westmorland and Furness

Westmorland and Furness Council is launching a ‘Community Conversation’ on the future of care for older residents and is inviting VCSFE organisations and residents to take part via online surveys.

The engagement programme, called “A Place Called Home: Your living choices in later life”, takes place over three weeks from Monday 9 March to 30 March across Westmorland and Furness. It will help inform the council’s future strategies for all aspects of its support for older people’s independence and wellbeing, including:

  • adaptations, technology and personal support to help people remain in their own home
  • reablement support and intermediate care beds to help people return to their own home after a spell in hospital, or avoid the need to go into hospital
  • access to the right mix of affordable specialist housing offering support and care
  • modern residential care, with facilities and services that are fit for the future
  • specialist support for people living with advanced dementia

The online survey for residents focusses on awareness and preference for future living accommodation choices. The stakeholder survey is a wider opportunity to give views on the whole area of support for older people’s independence and wellbeing, and to influence the council’s future direction.

The links and surveys are all live:

Last chance for funded session - Poverty Proofing © Healthcare Training

We understand that minimising the impact of poverty on healthcare provision is key to breaking the link between an individual’s income and their opportunity to live a long, healthy life. Our Poverty Proofing© team experts can support healthcare teams to listen to the experiences of their patients, staff and stakeholders on how poverty impacts them. We can then provide tailored guidance, built on evidence and tested methods, on what actions can support improvement in areas such as access, participation, experience and long-term engagement.

What will you gain from the training

Staff will gain understanding and awareness about:

-How poverty is defined
-Poverty statistics in a national and local context
-The causes and consequences of poverty
-The unconscious bias and stigma surrounding poverty
-The link between poverty and health outcomes
-How organisational practices can create barriers to accessing healthcare
-Why a whole system approach is needed when addressing health inequalities
-How the lived experience of individuals can be used to inform change

The session is taking place 26th March 2026 12pm-3pm (Online via MS Teams)

Furness For You’s fabulous website

Total honesty time: I don't live in Barrow. Or anywhere on the Furness Peninsula. Or (and brace yourselves) even in Cumbria.

Shockingly, I hopped over the southern edge and just into Lancashire a few years ago. The border checks weren't too traumatising, but I had to sign something stating I wouldn't say anything negative about the rain, lakes, sheep and big hills, or commandos from the crack Gingerbread/Pencils division would be paying me a visit when I was least expecting it to 'have a word' about my attitude.

Having got that terrible confession out of the way, why have I been looking after the fantastic Furness For You website since November?

Well the website, which connects people locally to community support, activities, events and services, had been making a positive difference for over a year, and staff changes meant a new keeper was needed. In my role as Communications Manager at Cumbria CVS, I happen to have a bit of experience with websites, social media and other associated skills. You know the type - bangs on about messaging, search engine optimisation, algorithms etc., and probably owns a fancy coffee machine and skinny trousers. Hello! That's me.

I'm part time in the Furness For You role, but I've already been utterly blown away by all the incredible activity the website helps to publicise. There are more than 100 entries in the Support Section, and nearly 200 weekly activities, clubs, drop-ins and support groups listed. And I'm adding more all the time.

I've not just been sat behind my desk sipping cappuccinos and admiring my stats (1,300 active users per month, viewing 2900 pages) - I've been in Barrow too. A few weeks ago, I was representing the website at our Funding Fair in the stunning Town Hall. I got to meet some amazing people, selflessly providing support and connections for local communities, and came away from the day genuinely humbled. If I can help get their projects more visibility, so they can help more people, then I'm chalking that up as some major job satisfaction.

I've been in touch with many organisations too, and had a couple of in-person meetings, with more lined up. Plus, being able to point people who have emailed via the website, looking for help, to appropriate support is good on the warm-glow front too; I've even been called an 'angel' which, if you've met me, you'd know is not the first thing you'd normally say about a scruffy guy in a loud shirt.

Missing from this equation though, is a presence on the ground in the Furness area - someone with strong relationships and a focus on building connections between community groups, social prescribers, local services, and statutory partners, making it easier for people to access the support available to them.

So, we're looking for a Furness For You buddy for me, or - to give them their correct title - Community Connector and Partnerships Officer. It's a part-time role, until March 2028, and a great chance for someone who knows the area well to make a real difference on their doorstep.

We'll be working together, with me focusing on developing and keeping the website up to date... and drinking cappuccinos and contemplating cake, obviously.

Scroll down to find out more about the new role (and another Barrow vacancy), and do take a look at the Furness For You website via the button below. I may be biased, but it is really rather fabulous... much like Furness itself.

And if you provide support in the area, or run activities and events, and aren't on there yet, get in touch! I may not actually be an angel, but I can make things appear on the website, and I once owned some white trousers and shoes. I know, right? *shakes head slowly*

Letter from NENC ICB Chief Exec about Strategic Transition Programme update

Attached a letter from Sam Allen Chief Executive of NENC ICB about Strategic Transition Programme update (how things will start to operate from 01.04.2026)

In the letter Sam provides details of the ICB’s:

  • NEW executive team (previously circulated)
  • NEW operating model
  • Central role of partnership working
  • NEW commissioning team
  • NEW area within which North Cumbria will operate
  • Closure of ICB led place committees

NEW operating model

Our operating model sets out a clearer and more streamlined organisation focused on the role the ICB is uniquely placed to play as a strategic commissioner.

Commissioning will be organised more transparently by sector, with multi-professional teams responsible for commissioning. Our teams will work as a single commissioning function focused on outcomes, value and impact for our population.

Central role of partnership working

Partnership working will remain central to how we operate. As place partnerships evolve, local partners will increasingly lead delivery and governance arrangements for integrated care and neighbourhood models.

ICB led place committees will conclude at the end of March 2026, with place partnerships moving to locally led governance arrangements from April.

The ICB will remain a strategic partner, setting outcomes, commissioning for impact while continuing to work closely with partners across place and neighbourhoods. Importantly, the neighbourhood director will maintain strong links between the ICB and local systems and supporting collaboration with local authorities, providers, primary care and the VCSE sector.

NEW commissioning team

Our commissioning director team will be:

  • Deputy Chief Operating Officer - Levi Buckley

Directors of Commissioning:

  • Neighbourhood North and North Cumbria - Rachel Mitcheson – NEW AREA for NORTH CUMBRIA
  • Neighbourhood Newcastle Gateshead and GPOD - Martin Short
  • Neighbourhood Central - Lynn Wilson
  • Neighbourhood South - Karen Hawkins
  • Secondary Care Northern Alliance - Paul Turner
  • Secondary Care South Alliance - Craig Blair
  • Mental Health, Learning Disabilities and Neurodivergence - Peter Rooney
