Council Devolution Update - for the VCFSE sector in Cumbria
The Government has confirmed that a Mayoral Strategic Authority for Cumbria would enhance economic, social, and environmental wellbeing and reflect local identities. This allows Cumbria to move to the next stage of devolution.
Westmorland and Furness and Cumberland Councils will decide in September whether to proceed. If approved, the authority would be legally established in early 2026, with leadership shared until a May 2027 election—delayed from 2026 to save £1 million.
Over 1,300 responses to a public consultation will inform the councils’ decisions. The new authority would gain powers over transport, housing, skills, economic growth, health, and public safety.
This joint council-led event will provide the VCFSE sector with further updates, viewpoints as well as answer your questions,
